Headgears and ornaments from the tribes of Central India that you must know

1. Bison Horn Maria Cap
A Bison Horn Maria Cap

One of the ancient tribes of Central India is Bison Horn Maria tribe that derive its name from their traditional headgear. Generally passed from one generation to another, the cap is made up of horns of bison and is decorated with beads, when worn hanging in front of the face. The back of the cap feathers are attached through a long banded-like structure. This headgear looks massive and adds a beautiful look to the traditional costume of men in the tribe. The people of this tribe call themselves Damdami Maria. Whereas women in the tribe wear a golden band on their head which looks quite like a plain crown. They also carry metal rods called Jhumka Lathi or dancing sticks.



2. Kardhan
The infamous Kardhan of Chattisgarh

Kardhan is a type of waist belt that is quite popular among the tribes of Chattisgarh. Worn only by married women, this ornament is made up of silver and comes in different sizes based on wearer’s choice. Generally, Kardhan looks like a parallel chains of silver connected by a clip. This ornament is also worn by the tribes of other states like Jharkhand and Odisha.



3. MelhedSakom and Sankha

These are bangles which are mostly worn by women of Santhal tribe in Jharkhand. Women of this tribe do not put vermillion on their forehead, therefore these ornaments define their married status. MelhedSakom is made up of metals and Sankha is made up of sankh or conch shells. This ornament is also worn by many tribal women in East and Central parts of India.



4. Gond marriage crown

Worn by the Gonds, one of the largest tribes found in Central India. This crown is made up of wild date leaves, cane, and tin foil. It also has a golden cover attached to it, looks beautiful and is of great significance, and is generally worn during wedding ceremonies. Gonds are spread across states like Chattisgarh, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh. Under Gonds, there are many subcategories of tribes.



5. Dhokra

Dhokra is a very popular craft that has made its way to the Indian jewellery market. But this craft is said to originally belong to the Dhokra Damar tribes. Made through the technique of nonferrous metal casting the ornaments are created by the lost wax process. This art then went from tribe to tribe and today you can find its craftsmen in states like Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha & Bihar.


6. Paijeb
Anklets worn by women of Satnami tribe

Paijeb or anklet is a popular ornament worn by the women of Satnami tribe in Chattisgarh. It is made up of silver and is wide, thick anklet given to a girl at the time of her marriage. Thus, this ornament is only worn by married women. Generally, it is 9 inches wide, weighs 100 to 300 gm, and is designed with two to three layers.



7. Nagmori

Armlet worn by women of tribes in central India

Popular amongst the Central Indian tribes like Agaria, Raut & Gonds, this armlet is mostly worn by women. The ornament has elegant folds which makes it look like a snake. It is made up of gilat or silver and can weigh from 200 to 1000 gm.
